As you walk down Shop Road, through the trees in front of you will be able to glimpse Forge Row in Cwmavon. A much larger house, Cwmavon House, is still in existence nearby. This was built in the 1820s for the ironmaster. All the houses are still residential and there is a thriving community here. The large building to the right of Forge Row was originally the Westlake Brewery, then the Eastern Valley Subsistence Society set up by Quakers to provide self help for the mining community, which was designated as a 'Depressed Area'.
